“Thirty-five years ago, the longest war of the last century erupted. But what unfolded as a brutal eight-year confrontation between Iran and Iraq still resonates today.”
The Iran-Iraq war beget the invasion of Kuwait, and the sanctions regime. It therefore also beget the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, the chaos that followed and the rise of ISIS. It also led to the consolidation of the Islamic Republic after the revolution and though it took more than 30 years, opened the door for Kurdish independence. In 30 more years who knows what else we will be able to add to this list.
